Rooted in the Garden Route: Our Honeybush Story
Kaukou Honeybush Tea (https://kaukou.co.za/products/) is cultivated and developed at Herold Meander, our farm situated halfway between George and Oudtshoorn, just north of the Outeniqua Mountains. Our farm lies within the Cape Floral Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and within the Garden Route UNESCO Biosphere Reserve—a landscape internationally recognised for biodiversity and ecological importance.
Our Honeybush tea is:
- Naturally caffeine-free
- Low in tannins
- High in antioxidants
- Gentle and suitable for any time of day
The traditional knowledge and heritage of Honeybush tea is also closely linked to the Khoikhoi ancestry of local communities, adding cultural depth and authenticity to this indigenous tea.
What We’ll Be Showcasing at Gulfood
At Gulfood 2026, our focus will be on two flagship products:
Original Honeybush Tea (Fermented)
Our Original Honeybush Tea is the classic, fermented form of Honeybush. After harvest, the tea is fermented at nearby processing facilities in the Garden Route. This process creates a deep amber-orange colour and a smooth, naturally sweet flavour—often compared to Rooibos, but with its own distinct character.

Green Honeybush Tea (Unfermented)
Our Green Honeybush Tea is an unfermented variety, processed to preserve a fresher, lighter taste profile. It is a popular option for health-conscious consumers looking for a clean herbal infusion.

How Our Tea is Grown and Produced
Quality begins on the farm. Our Honeybush tea is cultivated from seed in our own nursery. After approximately six months, the plants are transferred to our southern slope farmlands, where they grow naturally for two years before being harvested.
Once harvested, our Honeybush is taken to processing plants in the Garden Route where it is:
- processed into fermented Honeybush (Original), or
- processed into green/unfermented Honeybush (Green)
